OUR WORLD IS CHANGING. OPPORTUNITY IS NOT.
In many parts of The Gambia, a child can lose a school year simply because a family cannot afford a uniform. Women often have access to land but lack seeds, tools, and support. Widows carry the weight of entire households without reliable income.
AKAFI walks alongside these communities, listening first, then responding with practical programs that remove barriers to education and build paths toward financial independence. Our work focuses on the people who are most often left out: orphans, women, and widows.

FROM SUPPORT TO INDEPENDENCE: OUR THREE PART APPROACH
AKAFI’s work follows a simple but powerful path.
We help families stabilize, grow, and thrive.
Orphan Support Program
Across communities in The Gambia, AKAFI equips orphaned children with school uniforms, shoes, and essential learning materials. By covering these basic needs, we help children stay in school with confidence and focus on their education instead of their hardship.
Women’s Community Gardens
Through community garden projects, AKAFI provides women with seeds, fertilizers, tools, and guidance to grow vegetables. These gardens strengthen food security, create local income opportunities, and give women a sustainable way to support their families.
Widows Empowerment Fund
AKAFI’s Widows Empowerment Fund offers small micro-loans and ongoing support so widows can start or rebuild small businesses. With this financial boost, they are able to regain independence, provide for their children, and rebuild their lives with dignity.
CHANGE SHOULD NOT TAKE A LIFETIME
Our Work in Action
Caring for Vulnerable Children With Dignity
Community challenge
Many orphans in The Gambia lack basic necessities such as clothing, shoes, hygiene items, and daily essentials. Without proper support, their confidence and emotional well-being are deeply affected.
AKAFI’s response
AKAFI identifies the most vulnerable children through guardians and community leaders. We provide clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, and essential daily-use items to help them live with dignity and stability.
What changed
Children feel supported, cared for, and confident. Families experience relief knowing their children have access to the essentials they need to grow and thrive.
Helping Women Grow Food, Income, and Stability
Community challenge
Many families struggle with rising food prices and limited access to fresh vegetables. Women, who often manage household nutrition, face challenges feeding their families consistently.
AKAFI’s response
We support women’s groups with seeds, fertilizers, gardening tools, and practical training. Women learn how to plant, maintain, and harvest their own vegetables through community-led garden programs.
What changed
More than 1,700 women now grow their own food, reduce household expenses, and earn additional income from surplus produce creating long-term financial stability and improved family nutrition.
Giving Widows the Strength to Rebuild Their Lives
Community challenge
Widows often carry the full burden of supporting their families but lack access to income opportunities or financial support. This leaves them vulnerable and unable to provide for daily needs.
AKAFI’s response
Through small micro-loans, business starter kits, and ongoing mentorship, AKAFI helps widows begin simple, sustainable income-generating activities such as selling cooked food, produce, or everyday essentials.
What changed
Widows are now earning income, supporting their families, and rebuilding their confidence. They feel independent, valued, and hopeful about creating stable futures for their children.
