WOMEN’S COMMUNITY GARDENS

Food security is one of the biggest challenges facing underserved communities. Many widows and women struggle to provide meals for their families or earn enough income to support them.
AKAFI’s Women’s Community Gardens Program empowers women with seeds, fertilizers, tools, and basic agricultural training so they can grow their own food, feed their families, and build financial independence.
A single garden becomes more than a source of food it becomes stability, growth, and hope.

Why Garden Support Matters

Supporting women through agriculture creates long-term stability because it:

  • Provides reliable food for families in low-income communities

  • Reduces reliance on external aid or uncertain income

  • Gives widows and women the power to support their children

  • Builds practical skills that last a lifetime

  • Strengthens community resilience during hardship

  • Improves nutrition and overall well-being

  • Creates income opportunities through the sale of fresh produce

Faces of Impact

“What started as a small garden became a mother’s new beginning.”

Jama, a widow supporting four children, used to rely on inconsistent income from neighbors. After joining AKAFI’s garden program, she grew her first harvest of vegetables and sold the extras in her community. That income now pays for her children’s school materials and daily meals.

“Fatoumata found strength in the soil she once feared she couldn’t cultivate.”

Before joining the program, Fatoumata had never farmed. AKAFI provided seeds, tools, and simple training today, she grows enough vegetables for her family and proudly teaches other women how to start their own gardens.

“A simple seed packet planted hope in an entire household.”

A young mother, Sainabou, struggled to feed her two children. Through AKAFI’s support, she planted her first garden and now grows peppers, tomatoes, and leafy greens. Her children enjoy healthier meals, and she has gained the confidence to support them independently.
